When should I start working on my college essays?
You can start working on your college essays whenever you want. The key to getting started is figuring out which colleges you want to apply to, since that will determine the specific essays that you will need to write.
Some schools have one essay that you need to write. Others have zero. Some have 3, 4, 5… just depends on the school.
The number of essays you will need to write also depends on the program to which you are applying. For example, if you are applying to the engineering program, there might be an essay or multiple essays that are specific only to engineering applicants at a certain school.
Typically, I like to see students working on their college essays the summer before senior year. While applications don’t officially open until August (in most cases), usually schools use the same essay prompts from year to year. If they are going to change the essay prompts, colleges and universities will often inform applicants ahead of time on their websites. So look into it.
If you can get most of your essay writing done before you start your senior year, you will be in a good place to get your applications submitted as soon as possible. Is it a good idea to submit your applications as soon as possible? Yes, for many reasons.
