How do I know that my child is attending the right K-12 school for their needs?
There are many ways to assess whether your child is attending the right school for them.
First, it’s important to talk to your child. Ask them about their feelings when they get home from school. How do they feel about their classes? Their teachers? Their classmates? Do they feel like they belong? Are they having an easy time making friends? Do they enjoy their classes? Do they feel that they are learning?
You might say, “Look, my child is 6 years old. It’s hard for me to get a conclusive reading on whether my child is in the right school just by talking to them.”
I understand completely. If your child is not outwardly indicating whether a school is right for them, there are other ways to assess the situation. Look at the curriculum that is being offered in basic core classes like math, English, reading, and science. Is the curriculum challenging your child? Or is it too easy? Is it inspiring your child? Or is it boring them? Is it possible that the curriculum is too challenging, and they need some assistance filling in some foundational skills that they haven’t yet developed? Whatever the case may be, there are ways to assess whether the school offers an appropriate curriculum for your child. Don’t know where your child is regarding their proficiencies and needs? Or maybe you’re just not that familiar with the academic curriculum? Reach out and schedule a consultation with me. I’d be happy to help!
Of course, there is much more to consider than just curriculum when it comes to finding the right school for your child. In many cases, curriculum might only be a small part of your child’s educational development. It turns out, a holistic approach is usually appropriate. For example, does your child’s school offer the kinds of activities that your child enjoys? Do they even offer enough activities for everyone? What about sports? Maybe they have sports, but they don’t have the sport that your child prefers. Sports participation might be vital to your child’s emotional and social development. What about clubs? Field trips? Leadership opportunities? Events that nurture a sense of community? Events that include both kids and parents? Building bonds and making connections with their community can help establish a child’s self-image and self-worth.
